This week I’ve been enjoying Dare to Disappoint,  a graphic memoir by Ozge Samanci about growing up in Turkey.   Born in 1975 Samanci witnessed deep conflicts between secularism and fundamentalism.  Ozge’s father wanted her to be an engineer but she wanted to follow her own path and be a scuba diver or perhaps an artist.  The political and social issues of the day are reflected through a child’s view of day to day life.  Samanci’s drawings are hilarious and poignant.  Now a professor at Northwestern University in Chicago you can check out her work here.
